There was a certain poetry and logic to soldier and priest, sword and scripture, joining forces to lead the most massive peasant revolt in English history. But here, it gets thrown out of whack by shoving a sad-sack farmer into the foreground.

Mr. Greengrass has worked with some top screenwriters, yet unwisely assigned himself sole screenplay duties here. He isn’t really a word man and the deficiency is evident in the prosaic dialogue and barely imagined characters.

On the continuum of historical epics, this film works by the numbers, buoyed by Garfield and the contemporary mirror Greengrass shakes in front of us. It’s got heart; I suppose that counts for something.

Greengrass creates a visceral, ahistorical, experience that could have used some tightening because you will feel the length of the movie, but it is an excellent example of aspirational history

Shot in bleak greys offering little by way of colour, on the muddy grounds or the cloudy skies, or the person of its characters...The Uprising is often hard to see or follow.
